Meet Dr Laila Khan

Meet Our New Cardiologist

1. What inspired you to become a cardiologist?
My Father suffered an out of hospital Cardiac arrest when I was an intern and he had a very good recovery which inspired me to become a Cardiologist.

2. What are your areas of clinical interest within cardiology?
I love all aspects of cardiology from primary prevention to secondary prevention to Women’s heart health issues, to serious conditions like infective endocarditis and acute heart failure. I am an echocardiologist and what that means is that I can use echo to image all 4 heart chambers and all 4 heart valves to diagnose your heart conditions.

3. What is your approach to patient care?
My approach is centred on listening carefully and taking the time to understand each patient’s concerns, symptoms, and goals. I believe in clear, open communication and ensuring patients feel informed and involved in decisions about their care. I aim to provide evidence-based recommendations tailored to the individual, while creating a supportive and reassuring environment throughout their journey.

4. What can patients expect when they see you in clinic?
Patients can expect a thorough and thoughtful consultation. We will discuss their symptoms in detail, review any relevant tests, and, where needed, arrange further investigations to clarify the diagnosis. I focus on explaining findings in a clear and practical way, outlining the next steps, and developing a management plan that is both effective and easy to follow. My goal is for every patient to leave the clinic with a clear understanding of their condition and the plan moving forward.

5. What do you enjoy outside of medicine?
I enjoy cycling, playing tennis in a doubles game, and playing the piano. I spend a lot of time with my family in Canberra, and having that balance helps me stay grounded and brings a fresh perspective to the work I do with my patients.
